ACTED has been active in Uganda since May 2007, both in the northern region and Karamoja. In the North, ACTED supports the early recovery process with a specific focus on the needs of returning populations displaced by years of conflict. It also expands access, retention, equity and quality of primary education. In Karamoja, the focus is enhanced food security and resilience to disasters, especially droughts, as well as improving the primary education sector.
ACTED focuses its intervention on strengthening livelihoods through improved resource management, conflict mitigation and capacity building. In Northern Uganda, as internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned home and gained access to land, ACTED is working with farmers on infrastructure and capacity development to rebuild agricultural livelihoods. In the Karamoja/Pokot area, ACTED responds to severe food insecurity caused by the drought in the Horn of Africa, providing support to agro-pastoral communities to increase their purchasing power and protect their assets, reducing vulnerability to natural disasters. As part of its integrated cross-border strategy between Uganda and Kenya, ACTED maintains its community-driven disaster risk reduction (DRR) focus and promotes conflict mitigation to ensure peaceful and sustainable access to shared resources.
In 2013, ACTED maintains a strong focus on this approach and looks at extending it further along the border with Kenya. ACTED continues working with community-level structures and initiatives such as the APFS, the CDMCs or the DEWS to continue building the communities’ resilience to disasters.

  • The jobholder will serve as the Chairperson of the Management Committee of the Institute;
  • Handle the overall supervision of the Institute's’ collaborative programmes and projects;
  • The incumbent will maintain a culture of accountability, transparency and ethics;
  • Prepare and provide periodic, annual and other relevant reports about the Institute to UNHRO and related stakeholders;
  • Maintain an accessible library including the archives and publications.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders and be the spokesperson of the Institute;
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Director General of UNHRO.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant must hold a PhD or its equivalent in the Medical Field, Humanities or Biological Sciences from a recognized Institution;
  • A minimum of thirty (30) publications in peer reviewed journals, fifteen (15) of these publications as the first or senior (last) author;
  • At least fifteen (15) years of experience in active research;
  • Excellent track record of attracting funding and grants;
  • Evidence of leading a research team(s);
  • Excellent written and verbal skills and ability to prepare and present papers to a wider range of audience;

Senior Project Engineer Job Vacancy at National Housing and Construction Company Limited

Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Measure and evaluate works done and prepare payment certificates.
  • Evaluate the quality of materials supplied to project sites and manage their usage.
  • Ensure a clean, safe and reliable work environment at project sites – with the target of zero incidences and accidents.
  • Plan for and manage the use of plant and equipment on sites to ensure that they are available all the times.
  • Provide the Company’s Management, whenever necessary, with relevant specialist,  expert and technical advice (on the basis of appropriate and comprehensive analysis and evaluation), with regard to the Company’s investment opportunities and projects – especially those involving Partnerships, External Contractors and other Service Providers – as well provide the necessary supervision, quality  assurance,  facilitation  and  coordination of  the  implementation of  the corresponding projects – with a view to ensuring their profitable success.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate should hold a Degree in Civil Engineering, or a closely related and relevant discipline, from a recognized University.
  • Five or more years’ experience as a Civil Engineer, Construction Engineer, or in a similar position, in a large and reputable Construction, or Civil Works Company, or reputable Consultancy firm, or on any other large civil works project.
  • Full and valid membership (Registered Engineer) of a nationally, or internationally recognized professional Engineers’ Institute, or body, such as MUIPE, is a must.
  • Specialized training, with appropriate qualifications in Project Planning and Management, from a recognized institution, are a must.
  • Additional qualifications in Business Management, from a recognized institution, are desirable.
  • Proven working knowledge and skills in application of Engineering-related Software and MS Office Packages (especially AutoCAD, Revit, MS Project, Word, Excel and PowerPoint), are essential.
  • Proven working experience in housing, or civil works project implementation, with evidence of successful projects, is essential.
  • Past experience in working with public, or private sector organizations involved in housing-related projects, or programs, shall be an added advantage.
  • Proven negotiation and communication skills.
  • Results-oriented, business-focused and pays attention to details.
  • Advanced coordination and networking skills.
